Introduction

India is mainly an agricultural country. About seventy per cent of the population are farmers. They are the backbone of the nation. Hence their importance is very great in our country.

Their present condition

Most Indian farmers are now leading a very miserable life. Industry has not thriven much in our country. Hence most of the people depend on agriculture. As a result there has been a great pressure on land. Each cultivator has got a very small amount of land. He gets only a small income from the produce of his land. So he cannot maintain his family with that income. For this reason he has to run into debt. Thus we see that the farmers as a class are debtors. We cannot describe what miserable life they lead. They live in wretched huts. They cannot always get two meals a day. They have not even ordinary clothes to wear. When they fall ill, they cannot meet the expenses of treatment and medicine. So, for want of food, drinking water, good dwelling houses they fall ill and die in large numbers for want of treatment and diet.

How to improve their condition :

(I) They are to be educated—The farmers are the backbone of the nation. So it is the first duty of the people and the Government of the country to improve their condition. If their condition is not improved, the whole nation will suffer. Generally farmers of our country are not educated. As they are poor, they cannot bear the educational expenses of their children. So they must be given free and compulsory primary education. Thus every cultivator must know how to read, write and do figure works. Then they must learn the principles of scientific agriculture.

(II) The old method of cultivation should be changed— Our farmers do not know how to cultivate the land scientifically. They follow the ancient method of tilling the land with a plough and a pair of oxen. But in Western countries, the farmers use motor tractors. Within a short time they till many acres of land and get more crops. But the Indian farmers cannot till so much land and do not get so much crops. Hence they should be trained to use motor tractors to till the land. The Western farmers use improved manure to make the soil fertile. For this reason also they get more crops. Indian farmers generally use only cow-dung as manure. This also they do not use in large quantities. Hence the fertility of the soil is not increased and the land does not yield more crops.

In Western countries the agricultural land is not divided into small plots. A farmer has got many acres of land in one big plot. It is economical to cultivate such a plot with tractors. In our country, the farmers have got small plots of land and the plots of a cultivator are situated at different places. Motor tractors cannot be used in such small plots. The cost of cultivation also is greater. Hence the farmers should join together and till their land with tractors. It is now done in Russia with great success. This is called collective farming. Like India, Russia also was mainly an agricultural country and the condition of the farmers was very miserable. But now scientific agriculture has been introduced there and the farmers are well off now and the country also has been prosperous.

(III) They should learn thrift—Our farmers should learn to be thrifty. They spend more than what they earn. When they reap the harvest, they sell the crops and get money. At that time they spend money lavishly. They do not then think of the future. Within a short time they spend all their money. Then they are compelled to borrow money. In this way they run into debt.

(IV) They should learn some craft—Indian farmers are not engaged for all the time in cultivating their land. Sometimes they have to remain idle. If they learn some handicrafts, such as spinning, weaving, they can earn some money and supplement their income from cultivation. They can thus be free from want.

Duty of the Government—As the prosperity of the country depends largely on agriculture, our Government should try to improve the condition of the farmers. They should set up agricultural schools and model farms to educate the farmers free of cost. They should irrigate the land to make it fertile. They should lend money to the farmers at a nominal interest during the season of cultivation. They should distribute good seeds and manure to the farmers. The farmers may not be able to buy tractors. Our Government should lend tractors to them at a nominal charge.

Conclusion

India is mainly an agricultural country. Hence her prosperity depends largely on the improvement of agriculture. This can be done if the condition of the farmers can be improved. If agriculture is neglected, all classes of people will suffer. There had been, for some years, shortage of food crops in India. We had to buy food crops from other countries at a very high price. Hence we all now feel the importance of growing more food. So for this reason at present there has been some improvement in this respect. More food crops are being produced now. As a result, our country is now self-sufficient in the matter of food crops. The farmers should get every facility to grow more food. If we can depend on our own food crops, we can save much money. This money may be spent in buying machinery for the development of industry. Considering all these, the Planning Commission has laid great importance on the problem of growing more food. In Community Development Projects also, our Government is trying to improve the condition of the farmers in all possible ways. All India Radio has a programme for the farmers. It is called “Krishi Kathar Ashar”. It is very useful for the farmers. They may learn many things to improve their knowledge of cultivation if they listen to this programme.

Highlights for me included Rory Nugent's eccentric search for the supposedly extinct pink-headed duck, and David Yeadon's brilliant portrayal of character interactions (including an Indian interrupting his narrative digression in real time "Sir, are you hearing me, sir?"). For every traveler that timidly scratched the surface of India without real discovery (such as a particularly uptight and sheltered Oxford Fellow's first trip) there was one so recklessly bold that you're glad you could relive the experience from the safety of your own home (including one author's visit to a tribal island where past visitors had been killed). Somewhere in the middle there's bound to be powerful inspiration for a trip of one's own.

Reading this book was not only satisfying, but served as a launching point for future reading of the complete works from which these tales were excerpted (David Yeadon's Back of the Beyond and Jonah Blank's Arrow of the Blue Skinned God seemed particularly interesting to me).

 

Vicariously experience the best and worst of India
I read this book after reading the DK guide to India and Leila Hadley?s A Journey with Elsa Cloud (the latter is about a tour of parts of India in the 70s). This excellent collection of true stories really made all the places come alive and gave me a much richer and fuller sense of India than I could get from just Hadley?s book. The poverty, sexism, and daily encounters with excrement that are a part of life in India are compellingly conveyed at the same time as we come to feel the vast heavy weight of so many centuries of history, so much spiritual questing, so much diminished glory. Since I finished the book, I have found myself repeating stories to friends from the excerpts from Rory Nugent?s The Search for the Pink-Headed Duck and from Mark Shand?s Travels on My Elephant, which were particularly vivid and fascinating to me. There are a suprising number of tales featuring cyclists--evidently India is a popular place to tour by bike.

I agree with the above reviews. There is such a variety of subject matter and types of writing collected in this book and I found myself saving so many pages with great information about places in India that I had not yet heard about but wanted to make sure I visited now when I plan my own trip!

I should begin by saying that I traveled around India with the fourth edition of the Rough Guide. Though I cannot comment on how updates and revisions may affect the utility of this particular version, I feel quite confident in recommending the Rough Guide over any other guidebook in the market.
My approach to travel has always been one of depth over breadth, cultural authenticity over the latest tourist craze. After spending 2 years in Senegal as a Peace Corps Volunteer, I went to India believing that I might somehow have the same ease of access to village life and cultural events that I had in West Africa. That belief was quickly dispelled, though I came to find many other redeeming qualities to travel and to life in India. In total, I have spent about one year in the country and have relied on my Rough Guide in many, many ways.

There is absolutely no way to compare the depth of historical context and cultural insight given by the Rough Guide with what you may find in Lonely Planet or other guidebooks to India. I frequently borrowed Lonely Planet guides from other travelers to compare its recommendations with the ones I found in my Rough Guide. I consistently found the Lonely Planet to be poorly researched, to offer extremely limited background information, and to eliminate many sites/entries of more obscure or esoteric value to the traveler. It would be incredibly difficult to stick to the Lonely Planet and not be one of the millions of blind backpackers circumnavigating the globe thinking they are actually seeing something. The Rough Guide, in comparison, offered countless 'text-box' entries describing the complexities of modern-day life in India. A few that come to mind dealt with drug use, journalism, organized crime, education, et al.

If you expect to spend a significant amount of time in India, you will want to know as much cultural information as possible in order to decipher the circus of events going on around you. In many ways you will be marginalized and will struggle to ever feel like you could possibly belong in the place. This of course is the love-hate relationship that nearly every foreigner who spends enough time there will eventually develop. That being said, your status as outsider will allow you to observe and analyze the country in ways that will teach you volumes about your own native land and culture. My Rough Guide proved to be an indispensable companion on trains and in hotels. It gave me the right combination of thorough logistical information for travel necessities and in-depth cultural information for personal ones. Use your Rough Guide to the fullest and get ready to see how much you can love and hate a place at the same time...

 

Not very useful for Northeastern India, but great for North India
I have just returned from a one month holiday in Bangladesh and Northeastern India. I was hoping for a more region-specific guide but there isn't one, so I had to carry this bulky country-wide guide with me.
This appears to be an excellent guide for the more "usual" destinations in India, but people should be aware that it barely covers Northeastern India at all. Part of this is due to an editorial decision to drop information from prior editions due to political instability in many of those states, but the decisions on which areas to drop do not match local knowledge about which areas actually might prove unsafe for foreigners as opposed to local politicians. Granted, it is an ever-changing scenario, and this guide is by now a few years old.

My main complaint though is the maps of the hill stations; particularly those of Darjeeling and Gangtok. They are just plain wrong, and not to scale (even in cases where they say they are to scale). Unfortunately the Indian government tourist maps for those towns and also Kalimpong are also wrong, and not to scale either, but are somewhat more helpful, so my suggestion is to visit the local tourist offices immediately upon arrival in each town and pick up their official maps.

In both cases, however, contours are missing, and considering that these towns have several hundred to several thousand feet differential between top and bottom, and that there are no pedestrian steps to cut across the time-consuming road switchbacks, one can easily make a wrong decision at a switchback crossing and miss a major point of interest (such as the major monastery at the top of Gangtok). At the very least, since most roads are one-way (and few if any are marked), showing directionals would help.
Considering this edition is many generations removed from the first edition, it is not acceptable that directions are often completely inaccurate. For instance, the major monastery outside Gangtok is listed as being to its east, when it is really to its southwest (but I did find it). And in Kalimpong, I missed the main monastery as I ran out of time after going more than twice as far as the stated distance and still not reaching the monastery south of town (which R.G. listed as being at the top of the hill, when ALL of the locals that I asked confirm it is near the bottom!).

To be fair, the Lonely Planet guide is much, much worse all around. I have just ordered the Footprint guide to see if it is more accurate and complete for this region of India. I would at least like an accurate reference for matching against my trip notes, photos, and writeups!

As far as the non-Himalayan eastern states are concerned, there is almost no coverage at all, for the previously stated reasons, but hopefully this will change in the next edition, as travel restrictions are blightening up and it is now possible to arrange permits for Aranchal Pradesh and Naga just a few days in advance (quite easy if you sign up for a local multi-day tour based out of a major town such as Guwahati in Assam).

It would have been helpful to be more specific about which languages are spoken in which towns/regions, as this area is quite a patchwork, and also to mention the likelihood (or not) of encountering English speakers. As it turns out, the main hub for northeastern connections, Siliguri (in the northern part of West Bengal state), inexplicably has almost no English fluency at all, even though ALL travelers must pass through this town to make onward connections. Most resourceful travelers can work through this though, but travel guides need to also guide the more timid tourists.

I will give Rough Guide credit for fairly good descriptions of the major highlights and how to reach them (which is quite difficult and more than one can ask from a guide that is only updated every two to three years). As always, they are the most culturally sensitive guide book and take the most effort to go for first source information (vs. Lonely Planet's habit of quoting second source information that is incorrect, without bothering to check it out -- and I am referring not just to location based information, but also cultural and historical background).

 

This was my travel companion.
After spending 3 weeks in India, I had only wished I read this book more thoroughly. I visted 4 areas (Mumbai, Delhi, Jaipur, Agra) of which I stayed in everywhere but Agra. Rough Guide has nice maps describing major areas, good list of hotels, and restaurants along with major attractions that were helpful in me finding my way.

I only had a brief chance to look at Lonely Planet from someone who sat across from me on a train back from Delhi to Mumbai so I can't say which one is better. By the end of my vacation, Rough Guide was always with me, along with my DSLR. I would strongly recommend you to consider this book as one of your travel books.

What more can I say?

 

This book is a guidebook only in the broadest sense of the term. In 800 hefty, glossy, photo-filled pages you will find everything you need to know as a Westerner to make a trip to India an amazing experience.History, culture, art, religion, architecture, food--for every region!--are all covered, accompanied by lavish photos,drawings and maps. There's a cursory section in the back listing hotels and restaurants that's already outdated, but there are othere more mundane guides for that sort of thing, not to mention the internet. I wouldn't even consider hauling this book with me on a trip, though--too heavy, and it would be ruined. It's worth it to copy the pages for the areas you'll be visiting, and keep this book on your travel treasures shelf.

 

Best guide on any country I have ever seen!!

DK's India is a work of joy. Very thorough and informative (including phrase books for five languages and tons of practical tips). Bought it in India and browsed through it as we visited places doubling the wonder of each experience. Written and put together by obviously a great team of writers, illustrators, art historians, photographers, editors and seasoned travellers. I am now finding that it is great for easy-chair travel around India also.

Read it all before you go (but don't take it all with you)

 

I used the 98 edition while travelling in Sept/Oct 99 and found it extremely informative even though the prices were outdated. Prices may change overnight but 1,000 year-old temple ruins probably won't. It did seem as though every other traveler (and hotel owner and rickshaw driver...) owned a copy, yet it provided an excellent orientation to the places I visited and served as a great reference tool for further exploration.  The maps were better than anything I found locally and the cultural info was very helpful. 

The book is bulky/heavy but tearing out key sections can easily solve this. I cut my book in half this way and got lots of envious stares from others lugging their entire LP or Rough Guide around and actually referring to maybe a third of it.

Get this book, get the LP Hindi-Urdu phrase book, but skip the LP travel atlas unless you want to walk across India.

 

Best guidebook, even for experienced India travelers

When Lonely Planet India first appeared in 1981, it raised the standard for all India guidebooks in the comprehensiveness of locations covered and the detailed information useful to independent travelers, especially those on lower budgets. Twenty years later, it remains the guidebook I personally rely upon most, despite my familiarity with India from extensive travels since 1980 researching my historical novels such as India Treasures. I first learned about that wonderful nonprofit home-stay organization Servas from a Lonely Planet guide, which led to many of our best experiences in India, including lasting friendships. Although my wife and I aren't backpackers, and we're probably mid-range in terms of the amount we spend on accommodations and food, the book is extremely helpful. It's the most up to date and highly detailed regarding such information as transportation options within India, the scams travelers can encounter, and a wealth of other tips too numerous to get into in a brief review.

 

Given the India guidebook's thickness and weight, I've found it convenient to cut it into sections and only take the parts with me for the regions I plan to visit. It's still desirable to get supplemental maps for any city or region one plans to spend much time in, as the maps in the book are usually pretty minimal in terms of detail. And other guidebooks do indeed have useful information this one doesn't (browse the travel shelves in your favorite bookstore to find the additional guides most suitable for your own interests and style of travel). I also advocate reading the better novels set in India, to experience insights into daily life that guidebooks can only hint at.

 

No single guidebook on India can be all things to all persons for all occasions, but this one surely comes the closest, especially for travelers who don't have their arrangements taken care of on organized tours.
